February 1999: Sonic Logos

our second philadelphia experiment

with Flowchart (fuzzybox), Fingernail (Doubtful), Paul "Woz" Woznicki, John Phillips, Dave Champion, Unsound, ian nagoski, the azusa plane, charles cohen, and elliott levin

The Consortium worked with Toshi Makihara and Mike Benedetti on this one. A fantastic show in two rooms. Transient waves was supposed to play but they bailed on us. A big mistake. Everyone who did come had a warm and inspirational creative expereience. Those who came for the music probably remember most fondly the lime green plush carpet of the playschool room we used as a space for Charles Cohen and Elliott Levin's set. Many of the performances at the show were recorded. So far, we only have Toshi and Elliott's to share. More will be coming as soon as Andy Wing can digitize them.

The event was really made possible by the folks who organized the NotCoffeehouse series at the First Unitarian Church. They were looking to have a music tie in to help bring in more people to hear their poet's readings. Meanwhile, we had in mind an event which fully integrated ambient and spoken word improvisation. The NotCoffeehouse folks weren't too keen on this idea and while Sonic Logos was fun it didn't really reach our ideal expectations.

I wanted to give all of you on the discussion list a preview of the schedule for the upcoming first Philadelphia Ambient Fest of the year: Sonic Logos 99! Sonic Logos 1999 February 7th, 1pm-10pm The Coffeehouse of the First Unitarian Church, 2125 Chestnut St., Philadelphia Here's the rundown. The day has been divided up into two parts and two rooms. Those staying for the whole show or who come after 5pm will be asked for a mere $5 dollar cover. Those coming for the poetry or until 5pm will only have to pay a $2 charge. The main room will feature stereo sound donated by Philly Space Enthusiast Andy Wing. (For those of you who were at last year's Ambient Fest, Stupid Robot, you may remember Andy as the man behind the excellent sound system). However there will also be non-stereo performances in the Little Miracles Kindergarten room, downstairs from the main room. This entire gig has been the result of a very special collaboration of local Philly fringe music organizers: the Philadelphia Ambient Consortium, IMP!, City of Improvizational Zeal, and help from the NotCoffehouse Poetry Series organizers.
