October 1999: Gate to Moonbase
Alpha
#1
Our first show at the Rotunda,
and harbinger of a gospel of weird noise and new interesting music.
Featuring Unsound
(Jim Speer and Mike Ciul), Dominick
Zappa, and room decorations by Andrew Eisenberg. The show also exhibited
the stylings of a short lived group called the Perfect
Pieces of Fruit, an excellent outfit organized by Ted Casterline. We
miss them.

Hello all,
The Philadelphia Ambient Consortium (Music and Noise) is almost a year
old. For about that long we've been looking for a free accessible
performance space for Philadelphia ambienteers, space cadets and
avante-experimentalists, flip-floppers and the like.
So it is auspicious that as PAC(MaN) celebrates its first solar orbit
completed on Earth, a birthday if you will, that it be part of the
larger celebration of what will be essentially the fulfillment of the
Consortium's practical goal. The Consortium was approached by the
Foundation, a new West Philly community arts and culture project
sponsored by the University of Pennsylvania working closely with the
West Philadelphia Cultural Alliance. The Consortium's been given the
third Friday of every month for an evening of Performances!
Hence, this Friday, October 15th will be the premier of a new series exploring
the creative expanse of ambient-space-psychedelic musical and sonic
curiosities. GATE TO MOON BASE ALPHA's first evening will highlight
improvisations and compositions by Unsound (Jim Speer and Mike Ciul),
the Perfect Pieces of Fruit (Dave Champion, Tara Burke, Yanni from
Stinking Liz, and Ted Casterline), Dominic Zappa and new media by Andrew
'Android' Eisenberg.

The performance is FREE to Sentients of all ages and corporeal forms! The GATE
opens at 8:00 PM EST at 4012 Walnut Street; entrance can be found at the
side/rear of the Rotunda. (Due to the nature of the space-time anomaly,
the GATE will only be open till 12:00 midnight).
Next month's GATE on November 19th may include performances by Charles
Cohen and Rick Iannacone and Chuck Van Zyl's Ministry of Inside Things
space music trio will likely perform in December, David Talento in
January, etcetera, etcetera. This is just so exciting! Please share this
info with your friends. Again the performances are free to all!
If you are an artist or if you know an artist who is ready to share
something special and wonderous, sound or video, please let the
Consortium know so we can consider your work for possible showing.
Thanks to Andrew Zitcer of the Foundation for making this possible.
Be well,

The Gate to Moon Base Alpha will soon be open for interspatial transport. At 8 o'clock EST Friday, October 15th at the Rotunda (4012 Walnut
St.), a performance of three electronic/improvisational projects: Unsound, Perfect Pieces of Fruit, and Dominic Zappa. Multimedia
experimentation will be constructed by Andrew "Android" Eisenberg. Free admission for all sentients and quasi-sentients.
Unsound is Jim Speer & Cap'n Mikee Ciul.
Mike Ciul: effects devices, samplers, thumb-piano, vocals
Jim Speer: MIDI Chapman Stick, loops, crumhorn, shahnai
Unsound's screeching ambience and raucous lullabies are made by connecting
electronic sound gadgets in unnatural ways. The feedback loops made with MIDI and audio signals are so complex that the electronics behave
like an independent musician. Unsound improvise music and tell stories in the form of low-budget performance art tableaux.
The Perfect Pieces of Fruit is Ted Casterline, Yanni Papadopoulos, Dave Champion, and Tara Burke.
Ted Casterline : percussion
Yanni Papadopoulos : guitar
Dave Champion : Electronified Trombone
Tara Burke : Farfisa organ
? : Trumpet
Perfect Pieces of Fruit is a psychic delicatessen of drones and loops, coated with sugar and viscous agar agar. Perhaps a soundtrack to
dreaming lemurs, at other times the hallucination of a lonely parking attendent, PPoF's septet will make your teeth rot and your belly full
with natural and artificial colors, flavors and soundwaves.
Dominic Zappa is formerly Bondra, formerly Asoa.
Keyboardist and sonic mixologist Zappa has been engaged with himself for a year now, and this perfdormance will be yet another example of
his flagrant and uninhibited musical exhibitionism. Just shameless!
Android is Andrew Eisenberg.
Taking a breather from WKDU DJing this term and an exciting series of DIY post-rave Raves, Andrew will be engineering the antique Gate
facility which has mouldered for a hundred years since it was last used by zealous Theosphical practitioners. [Andrew and the ImagiNation
Crew were responsible for the barrage of droplets a half a year ago at the First Friday spectacles.]
The gate of course is just a minor storage facility and warehouse transportation unit, necessarily invisible to this time phase. However,
with the help of Andrew, the other artists, and the communion of the listeners, the gate will become operational for transport, if only for
three and three quarter hours. If you come too late you will miss the time phasing so don't me late! the gate opens at 8:00pm EST for
humans of all shapes, sizes, orbits and ages. Thanks to Andrew Zitcer of the Foundation for making this space available to the Consortium.
